The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of candidates for the 2027 general elections, bringing months of political speculation to an end and confirming the exclusion of several prominent political figures from the ballot. Among the notable names absent from the list is former President Goodluck Jonathan, despite claims by the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that it had submitted his name as the party's presidential candidate. Also missing are Delta North Senator Ned Nwoko, former Gombe State Governor Danjuma Goje, former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel, and Kebbi South Senator Garba Maidoki, all of whom failed to secure places on the final register published by the electoral commission. The development comes despite earlier assurances from Senate President Godswill Akpabio that the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership would address concerns raised by lawmakers who lost their tickets during the party's primary elections. Although the APC later reviewed several petitions and reinstated six serving senators following recommendations by its Primary Election Appeal Committee, many influential politicians who had hoped to benefit from the exercise were ultimately left off the final list submitted to INEC. In Delta State, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa emerged as the APC's senatorial candidate for Delta North, confirming Ned Nwoko's earlier defeat in the party's primary election. In Gombe State, former Governor Danjuma Goje also failed to secure the APC ticket after losing to retired Deputy Commissioner of Police Mohammed Ahmed. On the PDP side, former Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo clinched the party's ticket for Gombe North, while Senator Anthony Siyako emerged as the candidate for Gombe South. The final list also showed that Bauchi South Senator Shehu Buba and House of Representatives member Mansur Soro will not return to the National Assembly in 2027. Buba has since moved to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), where he secured the party's governorship ticket, while Soro had earlier announced that he would not seek another elective office. The APC's internal review process affected several states, including Kogi, Benue, Taraba, Ondo, Abia, Niger, Kwara, Kaduna and Ebonyi, leading to the reinstatement of six serving senators after successful appeals. Among those restored were Sunday Karimi, Emmanuel Udende, Titus Zam, Shuaibu Isa Lau, Adeniyi Adegbonmire and Olajide Ipinsagba. In Abia South, Prince Paul Ikonne also replaced Edinburgh Uchenna Erondu as the party's senatorial candidate. One of the biggest outcomes of the appeal process was the reversal of former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam's earlier victory, with incumbent Senator Emmanuel Udende eventually reclaiming the APC ticket. With the publication of the final candidates' list, political parties are expected to shift attention to full-scale campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
