Anglican Crisis Deepens as Ezeofor Removes Nwofor as Awka Diocese Chancellor

The decision was conveyed in a letter dated October 17, 2026, issued by the Office of the Supervising Bishop of the Diocese of Awka and signed by the Rt. Rev. Dr. Samuel C. Ezeofor, who was recently appointed to oversee the diocese amid the ongoing dispute involving Archbishop Alexander Chibuzo Ibezim.

Titled “Removal as the Chancellor of the Diocese of Awka (Anglican Communion),” the letter informed Nwofor that his appointment had been revoked with immediate effect.

According to the letter, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) was accused of using his position as Chancellor to undermine the authority of the Primate of the Church of Nigeria and disregard directives issued by the church’s national leadership.

The letter further alleged that his actions were aimed at drawing the church into additional legal and internal disputes, making him unsuitable to continue serving as Chancellor under the authority of the Primate.

Consequently, Nwofor was directed to hand over all diocesan properties and official documents in his possession to the Legal Secretary without delay.

Copies of the letter were also sent to the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, the Chancellor of the Church of Nigeria, and the Church Registrar.

The development comes amid the ongoing leadership dispute within the Diocese of Awka, which has attracted significant attention within the Anglican Communion, particularly following the actions taken against Archbishop Ibezim.

BriefMedia will continue to monitor developments surrounding the crisis and report further updates as they emerge.
