The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a 25-year-old female student whose body was discovered in Onitsha under circumstances suggesting a suspected suicide.
According to the police, a handwritten note believed to have been left by the deceased was recovered at the scene. The incident, which reportedly occurred on June 18, 2026, attracted public attention after a video showing residents gathered around the scene circulated on social media. Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, Ikioye Orutugu, expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend of troubling social and moral challenges affecting young people. He stated that preliminary findings indicate the student may have taken her own life and revealed that investigators recovered a note containing claims of emotional distress linked to a relationship breakup. According to the commissioner, the note alleged that the deceased had undergone three abortions for an unidentified man named Chigozie before the relationship ended. However, police emphasized that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death. Orutugu called on parents, guardians, communities, religious bodies, educational institutions, and civil society organizations to strengthen emotional support systems for young people, stressing the importance of open communication, mentorship, and value-based upbringing. He noted that many social challenges could be reduced through effective parenting and greater attention to the emotional well-being of youths. The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough and discreet investigation. If you or someone you know is experiencing thoughts of self-harm or severe emotional distress, seeking immediate support from trusted family members, friends, mental health professionals, or emergency services can be an important step toward getting help.
