FG Plans to Expand Cooking Gas Programme to Over 10m Nigerian Homes
The Federal Government says its National Grassroots LPG Penetration Programme is expected to reach millions of Nigerian households as part of efforts to promote cleaner and safer cooking across the country.
The initiative, being driven by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas) and the Decade of Gas Initiative, has now been launched in Akwa Ibom State after its earlier rollout in Bayelsa.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, said the programme is designed to reach about one million households annually, with a target of five million homes by 2030 and over 10 million homes in the long term.
As part of the Akwa Ibom rollout, 27,000 filled cooking gas cylinders are expected to be distributed to women across the state. The nationwide programme is also planned for all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Officials said the initiative will operate through a cylinder exchange system aimed at bringing refill points closer to communities. Beneficiaries could receive up to six free refills, while a digital monitoring platform will help track cylinders, refills and household participation.
The Federal Government said the programme is expected to reduce dependence on unhealthy cooking methods, improve household welfare, create jobs and open new opportunities across the gas value chain.
Akwa Ibom Governor, Umo Eno, welcomed the initiative, saying it could improve lives while also creating investment opportunities in LPG bottling, cylinder production, gas storage, transportation and other energy infrastructure.
The minister also launched a rural women empowerment programme under which 3,000 women are expected to receive ₦100,000 each, amounting to ₦300 million in direct support for businesses, farming and household income.
The nationwide rollout will continue, with more states expected to join the programme in the coming months.
