The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 4,959 kilograms of Canadian Loud cannabis with an estimated street value of ₦12.397 billion at the Apapa Port in Lagos, while also dismantling a drug trafficking syndicate accused of planting illicit substances in the luggage of unsuspecting interstate travellers. In a statement issued on Sunday by the agency's Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA disclosed that a 38-year-old businesswoman, Iwebema Ogechi Peace, was arrested at the departure terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on June 21 while preparing to board a flight to Beijing, China. According to the agency, a search of her luggage uncovered four parcels of cocaine weighing a total of 7.5 kilograms concealed inside a specially constructed false compartment. The agency also revealed that the shipment of Canadian Loud had been under surveillance for more than four weeks before officers intercepted it during a joint inspection involving the Nigeria Customs Service and other security agencies at Apapa Port on June 23. NDLEA said the 40-foot container, which also carried Ford and Nissan vehicles, originated in Toronto, passed through Montreal and Morocco before arriving in Lagos, where the illicit consignment was recovered. In another major breakthrough, operatives uncovered a criminal network that secretly hid drugs inside the luggage of unsuspecting passengers travelling by road. The investigation began after officers intercepted a Sienna bus travelling from Nnewi, Anambra State, to Abuja and discovered 467.7 grams of methamphetamine concealed in a passenger's bag. When the passenger denied ownership of the package, further investigations led to the arrest of bus loaders and the driver, whose confessions reportedly helped investigators identify and arrest the alleged owner of the drugs in Abuja. Elsewhere, NDLEA operatives arrested a 57-year-old suspect, Ikechukwu Uwakwe, at Iddo Motor Park in Lagos with 209.5 kilograms of Scottish Loud cannabis allegedly destined for Enugu State. The agency also intercepted a truck transporting 558,900 pills of Tramadol 250mg concealed in a hidden compartment. Three suspects, including two nationals of the Benin Republic and one Nigerian, were arrested in connection with the seizure. Along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, officers apprehended two suspects after recovering 118 kilograms of skunk hidden among legitimate goods in a truck travelling to Onitsha, Anambra State. In a separate operation in the Amukoko area of Lagos, two women were arrested with 28.8 kilograms of skunk. Investigators alleged that one of the suspects used the other's residence as a storage facility before distributing the drugs to customers. Commending the successful operations, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), praised officers across the affected commands for sustaining the agency's campaign against drug trafficking while continuing public awareness and drug abuse prevention programmes. He urged personnel to remain committed to intensifying the fight against illicit drug activities across the country.
