Community pharmacists, healthcare professionals, and key stakeholders gathered in Awka for the 34th Annual Conference of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), Anambra State Branch, where participants stressed the need for greater political engagement to strengthen the pharmacy profession. The conference, themed “Advancing Political Systems to Drive Professional Growth and Relevance: A Way Forward for Anambra Community Pharmacy Practice,” featured a keynote address by former Managing Director of the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) and President of Charlton Business School, Abuja, Chief Uche Nworah. In his presentation, Chief Nworah described community pharmacists as more than medicine dispensers, saying they are nation builders, health educators, counsellors, and custodians of public trust. He urged pharmacists to become actively involved in policy advocacy, research, and strategic partnerships to influence healthcare policies and improve service delivery. According to him, politics plays a critical role in shaping healthcare through budgetary allocations, drug regulation, taxation, infrastructure, electricity supply, security, and other policies that directly affect the profession. He also encouraged pharmacists to embrace technology by adopting tele-pharmacy, electronic dispensing systems, digital health solutions, and data-driven practices while combating misinformation. Declaring the conference open, the Chairman of ACPN, Anambra State Branch, Pharmacist Felix Ikenna-Enendu, said the choice of the conference theme was informed by the growing need for pharmacists to participate in policy formulation and decision-making processes. He noted that professional competence alone is no longer sufficient to secure the future of community pharmacy, adding that Nigerians deserve a stronger and more influential pharmacy profession capable of contributing to healthcare policy and governance. Chairman of the occasion and former Anambra State Commissioner for Housing, Pharmacist Pauly Onyeka, described pharmacy as a noble profession and urged practitioners to uphold the highest ethical standards while serving as role models for younger pharmacists. Also speaking, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for Awka South II Constituency in the 2027 general election, Pharmacist Boniface Ebutu, said his background as both a pharmacist and a politician has given him a unique perspective on public service. He encouraged fellow pharmacists to actively participate in leadership and governance. The Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Pharmacist Chidiebere Odili, also addressed participants, highlighting the importance of unity and continuous professional development within the association. The conference featured exhibitions by pharmaceutical companies, inspection of exhibition stands, product presentations, and goodwill messages from stakeholders, bringing the event to a successful close.
