DR Congo made a dream start when Brian Cipenga fired his side into an early lead, putting England under pressure. However, Thomas Tuchel's team responded after the break, with captain Harry Kane scoring twice in the second half to complete the comeback.
Kane equalised midway through the second half before netting the decisive goal in the closing minutes to send England through.
The victory sets up an intriguing Round of 16 encounter between England and co-hosts Mexico, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
