Forest players, coaches and supporters gave the 29-year-old a warm send-off on Sunday during the club’s final pre-season match, a 2-0 victory over French side Stade Brestois at the City Ground.
Awoniyi is set to move to Coventry in a deal reportedly worth around £17 million, with the transfer expected to be completed before Coventry’s Premier League opener against Arsenal on Friday.
The Nigeria international joined Forest from Union Berlin in 2022 for a then-club-record fee of £17.2 million. During his four-year spell, he scored 23 goals in 103 appearances.
However, competition from Chris Wood and Igor Jesus limited his opportunities last season. He made only three starts and scored four goals in 17 appearances across all competitions.
Awoniyi also endured a serious setback in May 2025 when he underwent treatment after suffering an intestinal rupture following a collision with a goalpost during Forest’s match against Leicester City.
Coventry, returning to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years, have been active in the transfer market. The club have added Gus Hamer, Carl Rushworth, Loum Tchaouna, Aurele Amenda and Ghanaian youngster Caleb Yirenkyi to their squad.
With Haji Wright currently sidelined, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ellis Simms are among manager Frank Lampard’s available attacking options.
Awoniyi will also reunite with compatriot Frank Onyeka at Coventry after the midfielder joined the club from Brentford following a successful loan spell in the Championship.
The move gives Awoniyi an opportunity for a fresh start as Coventry prepare for their return to England’s top flight.
