FX market records 22% rise in weekly turnover

Nigeria's foreign exchange market posted stronger trading activity in the final week of June, with total turnover increasing by more than 22 per cent as higher volumes in spot trading and forward contracts boosted market performance.

Data released by FMDQ Securities Exchange for the week ended June 26, 2026, showed that total transactions across the FX spot and derivatives markets reached $2.84 billion, compared with $2.32 billion recorded in the previous week. This represents an increase of about $512 million.

The report indicated that the improvement was mainly driven by the spot market, where transaction value climbed by 21.18 per cent to $2.77 billion from $2.29 billion a week earlier.

Trading in FX derivatives also recorded strong growth, rising 77.2 per cent to $64.04 million from $36.14 million. The increase was largely attributed to greater activity in FX forward contracts, while exchange-traded FX futures remained inactive during the period.

With the higher trading volumes, the market's average daily turnover rose to approximately $567 million for the week.

The stronger performance reflects continued efforts to improve liquidity and efficiency in Nigeria's foreign exchange market, while supporting a more transparent trading environment under the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market framework.
