India Arrests Four Nigerians in Separate Anti-Drug Operations
Indian authorities have arrested four Nigerian nationals in separate anti-narcotics operations as security agencies intensify efforts to combat drug trafficking across the country.
One of the suspects, identified as Ugochukwu Nwabugo, was injured after reportedly jumping from the sixth floor of a residential building during a raid by India's Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Gandhi Colony, Mehrauli, South Delhi.
According to Indian authorities, the operation was carried out after intelligence reports linked the apartment to suspected drug trafficking activities. Officials alleged that occupants of the building attempted to destroy evidence by flushing narcotics down the toilet before officers gained entry.
Investigators said traces of cocaine were found on the apartment walls and on the suspects, while approximately 318 grams of cocaine and six grams of heroin were recovered during the search.
Two other Nigerians, Gabriel Uchenna and Igwe Joshua, were arrested at the scene.
The NCB said Nwabugo sustained injuries to her head, back and leg after the fall. Officers immediately rushed her to Fortis Hospital before she was transferred to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for specialist treatment. Authorities said she is recovering, while investigations into the case continue.
In a separate operation in Goa, police arrested another Nigerian, Igwe Chinudde, in connection with the seizure of five kilograms of cannabis (ganja).
The arrest followed an earlier operation in which police detained Mohammad Azharuddin Nur Mohammad after recovering the cannabis. Investigators later linked Chinudde to the case, leading to his arrest.
Police said investigations are ongoing to identify additional suspects and dismantle the wider network believed to be connected to the alleged drug trafficking activities.
The latest arrests come amid a series of anti-drug operations involving Nigerian nationals in India. Earlier this year, a Nigerian woman reportedly died after falling from a residential building during a police raid on a suspected drug manufacturing site in Delhi. Authorities also recalled a similar incident in 2017 involving another Nigerian national who died after reportedly jumping from a building while attempting to evade arrest during a police operation.
