South Korea opened their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic on Thursday, finally turning their dominance into goals after creating numerous chances throughout the match.
For much of the game, it looked as though the Koreans would be made to regret their wastefulness in front of goal. However, substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu struck the winner in the 80th minute, delighting the South Korean supporters inside Guadalajara Stadium.

Led by Son Heung-min, South Korea controlled the first half but failed to find the breakthrough. Son came close on several occasions, first blasting an effort over the bar before embarking on a powerful run past two Czech defenders, only to send his shot wide.
The entertaining second half began with the Czech Republic taking the lead against the run of play. Ladislav Krejci rose highest at the near post to power a header beyond goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu.
South Korea's persistence finally paid off in the 67th minute when Hwang In-beom produced a moment of quality. After cleverly disguising a shot, he delicately lifted the ball over Czech goalkeeper Matej Kovar to level the score.
The Czechs thought they had restored their advantage, but their goal was ruled out. Hwang then played a decisive role once again, delivering a cross from the right that Oh calmly slotted home to complete the comeback.
When the final whistle blew following a frantic finish, Son collapsed to the turf in celebration as South Korea secured all three points.
South Korea will next face co-hosts Mexico on June 18 after the Mexicans defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening Group A match earlier on Thursday. The Czech Republic, meanwhile, will take on South Africa in Atlanta on the same day.
