Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United in a club-record deal reportedly worth £85 million ($113.4 million).
The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder moves across London after West Ham's relegation from the Premier League. Fernandes joined English football with Southampton in 2024 before moving to West Ham in 2025, having developed through the academy of Sporting CP.

Speaking after completing the transfer, Fernandes said Spurs' stature and the influence of head coach Roberto De Zerbi convinced him to make the move.
"Spurs is a massive club and the head coach was a key part of why I have decided to join. When we spoke, it was very special. We look at football in the same way – going onto the pitch as a strong team, with fight and energy, to try and win every game."
De Zerbi, who is rebuilding Tottenham after the club narrowly avoided relegation last season, praised the midfielder's technical ability and mentality.

> "I've admired Mateus for a long time because he combines quality on the ball with the intensity and intelligence that are so important in the way we want to play. Despite his age, he already has good experience in the Premier League and has shown quality and consistency at this level."
Fernandes made his senior debut for Portugal national football team in April but missed out on Roberto Martínez's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. At Tottenham, he is expected to strengthen the club's midfield as they look to improve significantly in the upcoming Premier League season.
