The Abia State Government has commissioned 20 additional electric buses at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia, expanding the Abia Green Shuttle fleet and fulfilling the commitment made during the launch of the first 20 buses on December 23, 2025.
The expansion underscores the state’s commitment to developing a modern, efficient, and environmentally sustainable transportation system. The new electric buses are expected to reduce operational costs, cut carbon emissions, and enhance public transport services across the state.
Designed with expanded cargo capacity and integrated accessibility features for persons with disabilities (PWDs), the buses promote inclusivity and ensure safer, more convenient, and dignified travel for all commuters.
The government also reaffirmed its commitment to road safety, announcing a zero-tolerance policy against traffic violations, including reckless driving, running red lights, and vehicle overloading. To strengthen enforcement, the Abia State Road Traffic and Safety Management Agency (ARTSMA), in collaboration with the Harmonized Task Force, will now extend operations until 10:00 p.m. daily, including weekends, to enhance the safety of lives and property.
The administration commended the Interagency Transport Team, led by Mr. Chinenye Mba Uzoukwu, for its dedication and professionalism in implementing the state’s transport reforms. It also emphasized that the proper management of transport assets and staff welfare remains a priority, warning that any acts of sabotage or vandalism will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.
The government further called on residents to fulfill their tax obligations, noting that increased revenue remains essential to sustaining infrastructure development and delivering quality public services.
According to the state government, the expansion of the Abia Green Shuttle initiative reflects its broader vision of building a greener, more inclusive, and economically vibrant Abia that creates greater opportunities for every citizen.
