Ademola Lookman was on target as Atletico Madrid produced an impressive 3-1 victory over Sevilla on Saturday to move to the top of the early La Liga standings. The result means Diego Simeone’s side have collected seven points from their opening three league matches and continue their strong start to the campaign. Atletico went into the game amid continued speculation surrounding striker Julian Alvarez, who has been linked with a move away from the club, including reports of interest from Barcelona and Arsenal. Alvarez was left out of the squad for the trip to Seville after being booed by sections of Atletico supporters during last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal. His absence, however, did little to affect Atletico’s attacking threat. The visitors took the lead just four minutes into the match when Lee Kang-in, signed from Paris Saint-Germain during the summer, delivered a superb pass behind the Sevilla defence for Alex Baena, who calmly fired a low shot into the net. Atletico doubled their advantage in the 26th minute through Nigeria international Lookman. The forward showed his quality inside the box, producing a clever finish that went beyond Sevilla goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos at the near post. Baena then completed a memorable first half for Atletico seven minutes later, scoring his second goal of the match to put the visitors 3-0 ahead. The Spanish international unleashed a powerful shot into the bottom corner from outside the penalty area after being set up by Marcos Llorente. Sevilla improved after the interval and managed to reduce the deficit through Miguel Sierra, who scored with a volley. However, the hosts were unable to build on the goal as Atletico comfortably protected their advantage to secure another important victory. Levante Thrash Betis Earlier, Real Betis suffered their first defeat of the season after being beaten 5-2 by Levante. Betis, who finished fifth in La Liga last season to secure a return to the Champions League, would have moved top with another victory. Instead, Levante claimed their first league win of the campaign after a thrilling encounter at the Ciutat de Valencia. Adrian de la Fuente opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a glancing header from a corner. Former Barcelona defender Marc Bartra restored parity for Betis shortly after the half-hour mark with a powerful effort from outside the box. Levante regained the lead in first-half stoppage time when Enzo Bardeli produced a stunning long-range chip after capitalising on a poor defensive pass. Betis levelled again before the break through Rodrigo Riquelme, who converted a flick-on from a corner. The hosts then took control after the restart, with Roger Brugue scoring twice to put Levante firmly in command. His first came from another set-piece situation before he bundled the ball home from close range after Ivan Romero had hit the post. Jon Ander Olasagasti completed the scoring with a late header to give Levante a memorable 5-2 victory. Elsewhere, Real Sociedad picked up their first points of the season with a 2-1 home victory over Espanyol.
