Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has reportedly made Manchester City his preferred destination, with negotiations between the two Premier League clubs said to be underway. According to The Athletic, the Netherlands international has decided against joining Tottenham Hotspur and is instead pushing for a move to Manchester City. Gakpo, 27, featured for Liverpool in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest and registered an assist during the match. His future has become increasingly uncertain following Liverpool’s reported agreement to sign Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola. Manchester City’s interest in Gakpo was first reported on August 24 as Pep Guardiola’s side look to strengthen their attacking options after the departures of Savinho and Omar Marmoush to Tottenham. City have also reportedly reached an agreement worth €40 million (£34.3 million) for Palmeiras winger Allan Elias. Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in December 2022 for an initial £37 million, with the transfer potentially rising to £44 million through add-ons. The Dutch forward made an immediate impact, scoring seven goals in 21 Premier League appearances during the second half of his first season at Anfield. He enjoyed his most productive campaign in 2024-25, contributing 18 goals and seven assists in 49 appearances as Liverpool secured the Premier League title. He later signed a new five-year contract in August 2025. Although his form dipped during the latter part of the 2025-26 season, Gakpo remained an important member of the Liverpool squad. He also impressed for the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup, scoring three goals in four appearances before the Dutch were eliminated by Morocco on penalties in the last-32 stage. Gakpo has reportedly made 180 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 50 goals and supplying 23 assists. Manchester City reportedly view him as a player capable of providing competition and cover for Erling Haaland while also giving the team another option in wide attacking positions. His ability to operate both centrally and on the flanks is believed to be one of the major attractions for City, particularly given the difficulty clubs face in signing forwards prepared to play a supporting role behind Haaland. With talks reportedly continuing, a deal could depend on whether Liverpool and Manchester City can agree on a substantial transfer fee.
