The suspects, identified as 84-year-old Godfrey Orji and 75-year-old Godwin Obulunbiya Obiora, were apprehended in separate operations conducted by operatives of the agency. According to a statement issued on Sunday by the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, Obiora was arrested on June 19 following intelligence reports linking him to the sale of illicit substances to students and other users through his patent medicine store. Babafemi said operatives recovered 4.64 kilograms of opioids, including tramadol and diazepam, during a search of the store located on Club Road in Umuahia. “Pa Obiora was arrested by NDLEA operatives on Friday, June 19, 2026, following credible intelligence that he was selling illicit substances to young students and others in his patent medicine store, where 4.64kg of opioids were recovered,” he stated. In a separate incident, Orji, a pensioner, was arrested after he was allegedly caught supplying illicit drugs to students of Saint Silas Secondary School in Old Umuahia. According to the agency, security guards at the school apprehended the suspect while allegedly supplying drugs to two teenage students before handing him over to the police, who later transferred the case to the NDLEA on June 18. Babafemi disclosed that one of the students, a 15-year-old Senior Secondary School Two student, admitted during interrogation that Orji regularly supplied him with drugs, which he consumed and also sold to fellow students. The NDLEA said the two elderly suspects would face prosecution, while the students involved had been enrolled in counselling and rehabilitation programmes. Meanwhile, the agency announced several other arrests and drug seizures across the country. In Lagos, operatives intercepted a 9.5kg consignment of ADB Chminaca, a synthetic cannabinoid regarded as a dangerous psychoactive substance, concealed in a carton shipped from China through a courier company. Another operation led to the recovery of 300 grams of Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, hidden inside ladies’ handbags at a logistics company. The agency also raided the residence of a wanted drug dealer, Lukman Badmus, popularly known as Lukman Ogombo, in the Ogombo area of Ajah, Lagos, where officers recovered bottles of codeine syrup and quantities of skunk. A follow-up operation at a shop belonging to his wife on Lagos Island yielded additional bottles of codeine, drug paraphernalia and 42 compressed blocks of skunk weighing 22.5 kilograms. The NDLEA said an attempt to destroy evidence during the raid was successfully prevented. In Kogi State, officers arrested a 33-year-old suspect, Tochukwu Onah, along the Okene-Lokoja Highway with 1.03kg of methamphetamine concealed inside custard containers while travelling from Lagos to Abuja. The agency also confirmed the arrest of two suspects, James Tony Chukwudi, 48, and James Kehinde, 35, who had been declared wanted in connection with the seizure of 117kg of skunk in Ekiti State earlier this year. In Oyo State, a raid on a residence in the Dangote area of Elekara, Oyo town, led to the arrest of three suspects, including 75-year-old Tudun Olubiyi. Operatives recovered 118 jumbo bags containing 1,416kg of skunk concealed beneath sawdust. Similarly, in Edo State, NDLEA officers destroyed large cannabis plantations in Khagba Forest, Owan East Local Government Area, where more than 1,700kg of skunk was destroyed and 169kg of processed cannabis recovered. Another operation in Esan South Local Government Area resulted in the destruction of over 2,400kg of cannabis and the arrest of 45-year-old Augustine Anyamone, who was found with 395kg of skunk. Commending officers involved in the operations, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Buba Marwa, praised commands in Abia, Lagos, Kogi, Ekiti, Oyo and Edo states for their efforts in combating drug trafficking. He urged operatives across the country to sustain the momentum in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking while continuing the agency’s War Against Drug Abuse sensitisation campaign.
