Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has moved against actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo over comments he considers damaging to his reputation.
Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has moved against actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo over comments he considers damaging to his reputation.
Through his lawyer, Alex Ejesieme (SAN), Obi has demanded a public retraction of the statements, an apology, and payment of N5 billion in damages. He also gave Okonkwo seven days to meet the demands or face legal action.
The dispute stems from comments allegedly made by Okonkwo during a television interview on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily on June 8. The remarks were later shared widely across social media and other media platforms.
According to Obi's legal representatives, Okonkwo accused him and some NDC leaders in the South-East of imposing an unofficial N10 million charge on House of Representatives aspirants in addition to the party's approved nomination fees.
The former governor's legal team also claimed that Okonkwo alleged that Obi personally influenced the selection of candidates, warned politicians against trusting him financially, and made remarks linking him and certain party officials to questionable activities.
Obi's lawyers dismissed the allegations as unfounded, insisting that they were capable of portraying him as dishonest and involved in unlawful conduct. They argued that the statements have the potential to damage both his personal reputation and public image.
While recognising the right of citizens to express their views, the legal team maintained that such rights do not protect the spread of allegations that cannot be substantiated.
As part of the demands, Obi wants the statements withdrawn from all platforms where they were published and insists that any apology should receive similar visibility to the original claims. He is also seeking a written commitment from Okonkwo to refrain from making similar allegations in the future.
Beyond the requested apology and retraction, Obi is demanding N5 billion as compensation for what he describes as the reputational harm caused by the remarks.
The letter further warned that failure to comply within the stipulated period could lead to court proceedings aimed at securing damages, restraining further publication of the allegations, and recovering legal costs.
