A woman was killed and five other people were wounded in a stabbing attack at a shopping centre in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar on Saturday, authorities said.
According to Russia's investigative committee, a 19-year-old man armed with what appeared to be a knife attacked shoppers inside the mall. The victim, a woman whose identity has not been released, died as a result of the assault.
The suspect was quickly detained by law enforcement officers and has been placed under investigation. Authorities said he will undergo psychiatric evaluation as part of the inquiry.
Krasnodar regional governor, Veniamin Kondratyev, confirmed that five people were injured and are receiving treatment in regional and city hospitals.
Investigators have opened a murder case, while the motive for the attack remains unclear. A video circulated by Russian media outlet Ostorozhno Novosti reportedly showed the suspect telling investigators that he was “sick of his life” during a brief interrogation following his arrest.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances and possible motives behind the attack.
